Choosing Fabric for Embroidery

For beginners: Cotton muslin can be a good starting fabric for simple surface embroidery. Start with a small design and test your needle, thread and stitches on a scrap before beginning.

Muslin or Aida? Plain cotton muslin has no built-in counting grid. For beginner counted cross-stitch, Aida's regularly spaced holes make counting stitches easier. Muslin is better suited to transferred or drawn surface-embroidery designs; cross-stitch on it generally needs a counting aid such as waste canvas.

Weave and stability: Check how closely and evenly the fabric is woven before choosing a design. This fabric's thread count is not specified. Lightweight fabric may pucker under dense stitching, so keep hoop tension even without stretching the cloth, test the design, and consider a suitable stabilizer or backing for heavier coverage.

Choosing a length: At 63" wide, 2, 5 and 10 yards provide nominal pieces measuring 63" × 72", 63" × 180" and 63" × 360" respectively, before washing or trimming. Even 2 yards can supply multiple small hoop projects; longer cuts offer more room for repeated motifs, larger panels or batches of projects. Check your pattern's finished dimensions and allow extra fabric around each design for hooping, finishing and possible shrinkage. Yardage alone does not determine the maximum design size.
